Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are diseases whit mainly transmission mode due to direct infection during sexual activities. They are generally caused by the transmission of bacteria, virus or parasites that pass from one body to another through contact with the skin (or genital mucous membranes) or with infected organic liquids (in some diseases also saliva). Men are more affected than women.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990 estimated that more than 250 million new cases of STDs occur annually in the world. In 2006, the same WHO reports an incidence of 19 million new cases per year of STDs in USA, about half of the cases in young people between 15 and 24 years. The diagnosis and therapy of an STDs must be carried out early both to prevent the affected person from progressing the disease and to prevent the infection of new individuals.

The rule is to always treat even the usual partner, even if asymptomatic, to avoid the so-called "ping-pong reinfections".
